The beautiful island of Funzi is a popular tourist destination in Kenya. Visitors enjoy the rich wildlife and feast on locally caught seafood. But the people in the villages of Bodo and Funzi endure very different conditions. On Funzi there is no electricity or running water and in both villages people live in traditional mud houses with no sanitation and their lives at risk from illness and disease.
The Funzi and Bodo Trust works with the villagers to provide healthcare and to improve educational facilities. Among its achievements are two medical clinics, road and water ambulances, funded surgery for the seriously ill, two rebuilt schools, a library , and a computer centre.
Through its activities the charity hopes to break the cycle of poverty which afflicts people's lives. The chairity employs no UK staff to ensure money raised reaches the people in Funzi and Bodo.
