Our Overseas Mission
A small group of Church members meet to organise events to raise funds for overseas work to help those less fortunate than ourselves in developing countries. We support a number of charities and website details are given for further information. Any weeks when the Peatfield Funzi team are away we stand in and provide home baked cakes and buns for sale to help raise funds and also create our very own St Peters café after Church.
The year begins with World Leprosy Day – usually the last Sunday of January. In 2011 we organised a very successful coffee morning and raised over £400 for The Leprosy Mission. We collect used stamps all year round which are sent to a central office for sorting and reselling – there is a collection box in the foyer for donations. Some members also have individual collection boxes at home for putting loose change in which can soon add up to a useful amount.
Fairtrade Fortnight is in February/March and we plan an Afternoon Tea for 2012 to raise funds. In 2011 we helped create a large banner to highlight the need for fair trade. This year we also organised a very popular Fairtrade Fashion Show in September which was aiming to raise awareness of fair trade clothes and accessories. Drinks for the evening were sponsored and raffle prizes donated by local companies and in the end we raised £444 which was split between the church and the Fair-trade Foundation.
Christian Aid Week is mid-May every year with the largest door to door street collection in the UK and for us involves all the Churches in Gildersome. The same week also has a sponsored walk of 6-7miles to raise further funds. Other events are arranged through the year by a Morley and District Christian Aid Committee and advertised in Church. All year round we have a collecting box for foreign coins and notes so if you return from an overseas holiday with a little money left why not drop it into the box?
St Peter’s Church has links with the parish of Butiama, part of Musoma Diocese in Tanzania and one of our members is in email correspondence. Our friends in Butiama have recently sent us a beautiful wood carving of the Good Shepherd as a thank you for the money raised to help with building their Church and vicarage. An event will be planned for 2012 to inform people about the village of Butiama and what our fundraising efforts have helped achieve.
